Born Noël Ngiama Makanda · December 25, 1965 · Kikwit, DR Congo · “Roi de la Forêt”
Werrason is not simply an artist — he is an institution. One of the most consequential figures in African music history, the King of the Forest is the co-architect of ndombolo, the godfather of a generation of Congolese superstars, and a cultural ambassador whose rumba has reverberated from Kinshasa to Paris and beyond for over four decades.
Born on Christmas Day in the Bandalungwa district of Kinshasa, the young Noël Makanda was first known as Tarzan — a decorated martial artist before music claimed him entirely. In 1981, while studying accountancy, he co-founded the legendary Wenge Musica alongside JB Mpiana and Didier Masela — a band that would redefine Congolese music for a generation. Following their 1997 split, he built Wenge Musica Maison Mère from the ground up, turning it into the most celebrated live act on the continent.
